2 mol % Yttria-stabilised Zirconia (2YSZ)
Our 2 mol % Yttria-stabilised Zirconia (2YSZ) offers outstanding fracture toughness of up to 14 MPa.m0.5, which is significantly higher than the current structural ceramic powder of choice, 3YSZ, and provides a unique balance with flexural strength.
A lower yttria content would normally offer less stabilisation of the zirconia matrix. However, the nanostructure imparted to our 2YSZ powders from our highly energetic manufacturing process - Emulsion Detonation Synthesis (EDS) - contributes to stabilising the zirconia and ensuring components produced from Innovnano’s 2YSZ meet the demands of advanced ceramic applications.
Our 2YSZ is available as a binderless or ready-to-press powder, providing an excellent alternative to conventional micron-sized 3YSZ. It can also be used as the zirconia phase in both alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) and zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA).

2YSZ from Innovnano exhibits the high component strength and durability required for the manufacture of structural ceramics. Innovnano 2YSZ exhibits outstanding performance in cyclic fatigue tests due to its ability to absorb energy. A characteristic that is only possible with our high values of fracture toughness that approach the typical range of metals and alloys. The result is an increased lifetime for ceramic components, for example, those used in rotary machinery.
2YSZ offers a high fracture toughness alternative to conventional micron-sized 3YSZ engineered ceramic applications. It can be used as the zirconia phase in both ZTA and ATZ.
